Nigeria replaces india as country with highest number of people living in extreme poverty(full list)

Nigeria has surpassed India as the country with the hihgest number of persons living in abject poverty, This is according to new reports by the World Poverty Clock (wpc).

According to the report, the state of poverty in Nigeria is growing by six persons every minute, the highest number recorded in the world.

While India is witnessing a decline in its level of  poverty.

At the end of May this year survey showed that Nigeria had an estimated 87 million people in extreme poverty, compared to India’s 73 million.

The report further stated that the democratic republic of congo may soon takeover from India as the second country with the highest  number of persons living in extreme poverty in the world.

It was also estimated that Africa may be home to additional 3.2 million people living in extreme poverty by the end of this year

This new reports may have possibly proved that the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal’s (SDG) aim to end extreme poverty by 2030 may  be unachievable even as Africa faces major population increase.

According to the united nations’, By 2050 around 2.2 billion people could be added to the world’s population and more than half of that growth will come from Africa. It also predicts that Nigeria will become the 3rd largest country in the world by that time.

WPC report further states that out of the 10 countries on this extreme poverty list, only Ethiopia is striving to meet up with need to ending poverty in the country.

Below is the list of the top 10 countries in africa
1. Nigeria (86.9 million people)

2. D.R Congo (60.9 million people)

3. Ethiopia (23.9 million people)

4. Tanzania (19.9 million people)

5. Mozambique (17.8 million people)

6. Kenya (14.7 million people)

7. Uganda (14.2 million people)

8. South Africa (13.8 million people)

9. South Sudan (11.4 million people )

and lastly Zambia with 9.5 million people
