Two of five robbers were apprehended by the Edo State Police Command for allegedly robbing and obtaining a Police officer of his service pistol at Oliha, Oredo local government area on Friday. The five-man gang have been reported to have been causing havoc in Siluko, Iriri and Ekenhuan areas of Benin City.
Reports gathered stated that the robbers made a hit on the Police officer who was on plain-clothing. The officer tried to defend himself by pulling out his gun but was outnumbered by the robbers as they got hold of him and obtained his gun and bolted away.
Working on information the Police were able to nab two of the robbers. They were identified as Emmanuel Oghenevo and Kelvin Ariowa. On interrogation, Mr Oghenevo disclosed that he is a driver from the Isoko North Local Government Area of Delta State and that poverty led him into this grievous act. He added that he and his gang had no idea that the officer they robbed was a police officer.
In his words; “One of us, called I.Y collected the pistol from the policeman and hit him on the head. As the policeman was coming out of his vehicle, he brought out his gun to shoot us. We did not know that he was a security operative. As he brought out his gun, I.Y dodged and pushed him. Another member of our group, Emma, pinned his hand and took the gun.”
He added; “I started robbing early this year. But I have not killed anyone. My family was suffering and there was no other way to feed. So, I decided to join the gang. I am not happy about my arrest and I advise those involved in crime to desist from it. If I am forgiven, I will leave robbery and join the police”.
