Eden Hazard then turned the tie around before the break but Fernando Llorente headed in early in the second half.
Llorente weas replaced soon after, and his
replacement Lucas narrowly volleyed wide
after a fine pass from Gazzaniga.
Giroud had a glorious chance to win the game in injury time, but glanced a free header wide after a fine Emerson Palmieri cross – and that meant the game went to penalties.
Eric Dier missed first as he blazed over.
Chelsea kept their cool and after Kepa denied Lucas Moura, David Luiz slotted in the winner.
The final will be played at Wembley Stadium on the 24th of February.
