OAU final year student commits suicide over poor grades

An English Studies student of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) identified as Grace Dara Opeyemi, has taken her life allegedly due to poor academic results.

Grace killed herself on Friday second of August by drinking sniper insecticide after finding out that she wouldn’t graduate with her course mates due to poor grades in her finals last semester. 

“From a copy of the academic records on the university portal it showed that she had five outstanding courses and special electives as carry over and was unable to write the final exams with her mates in the last semester,” a schoolmate said.

OAU’s Public Relations Officer Abiodun Olarewaju, confirmed the incident but told The Nation that he is yet to be briefed about it. 

He revealed that he learnt the deceased took sniper after falling into depression, an aftermath of an alleged poor academic performance.

She was reportedly rushed to the University’s health centre and was later referred to the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital where she reportedly died.
