Nigerians have taken to social media to react to the statement issued by the University of Benin, after its student Vera Uwaila Omozuwa, was raped and murdered in a church by unknown culprits.
The 22-year-old 100Level student of Microbiology was raped and killed inside a Redeemed Christian Church of God branch in the city while reading.
The tragic incident, which happened three days ago, according to friends, saw her attackers smashing her head with a fire extinguisher and leaving her unconscious around the Ikpoba Hill area of Benin City, the state capital.
She later succumbed to her injuries after being taken to a hospital for treatment.
The University has responded with a statement which many seemed to take issue with as it involved a warning which said that ‘young ones ought to mind who the kept as company and the places they visited’.
This yielded outrage as Uwa had been murdered in a church where she’d been reading and many argued that if it had been in different conditions, the victim was not to blame for the crime.
Meanwhile Governor Godwin Obaseki has announced that he’s ordered the police to get to the route of the matter as soon as possible and to find the perpetrators for trial and sentencing.
