In a surprising move, President Muhammadu Buhari has nominated his special assistant on social media, Lauretta Onochie, for the position of national commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) representing Delta State.
The post is traditionally reserved for persons who are neutral and not loyal to any particular party of member of a party. Many have raised concerns that Mrs Onochie’s lotalty might be to her boss, the president.
The president also nominated Prof. Mohammed Sani (Katsina), Prof. Kunle Ajayi (Ekiti) and Seidu Ahmed (Jigawa) for confirmation as INEC commissioners.
This was contained in a letter to the National Assembly and read by Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, during plenary on Tuesday.
The nomination, Buhari said, was under Paragraph 14 of part 1F of the First Schedule of the 1999 Constitution.
