Joseph R. Biden Jr. has defeated the incumbent President, Donald Trump at the polls to become the 46th elected president of the United States of America.

Biden promised to restore political normalcy and a spirit of national unity to the country following his take over from Trump.

Biden won by millions of votes making Trump the first incumbent in 25 years to lose his reelection.

The result also provided a history-making moment for Mr. Biden’s running mate, Senator Kamala Harris of California, who will become the first woman to serve as vice president.

The outcome of the race came into focus slowly as states and municipalities grappled with the legal and logistical challenges of voting in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic.

With an enormous backlog of early and mail-in votes, some states reported their totals in a halting fashion that in the early hours of Wednesday painted a misleadingly rosy picture for Mr. Trump.

It would soon be time, Biden said, “to unite, to heal, to come together as a nation.”

He has won the election after getting 284 electoral votes when only 270 were needed. Trump scored 214.
