The Senate has rejected a proposed amendment to the Electoral Amendment Bill that would have made the electronic transmission of election results mandatory ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The amendment sought to alter Clause 60, Subsection 3, by requiring presiding officers of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to transmit results electronically from polling units to the INEC Result Viewing (IREV) portal in real time.
Under the rejected provision, results would have been uploaded only after Form EC&A had been signed and stamped by the presiding officer and countersigned by party agents at the polling unit.
Instead, the Senate opted to retain the existing wording of the Electoral Act, which gives INEC the discretion to determine how results are transmitted.
“The presiding officer shall transfer the results, including the total number of accredited voters and the results of the ballot, in a manner as prescribed by the Commission,” the law states.
