A spokesperson for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has clarified that the selection of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate will rest solely with party delegates when the time comes, Dockaysworld reports.
Paul Ibe, Atiku’s media aide, made this known on Wednesday in a Facebook post addressing growing speculation around the emerging presidential race within the opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to Ibe, the number of politicians within the ADC coalition indicating interest in the presidency should not raise concern, as such ambition is a legitimate part of the democratic process.
“There’s nothing wrong in all of them wanting to be president,” Ibe wrote. “The delegates of the party will, at the appropriate time, determine who will be the presidential candidate. That is DEMOCRACY — as opposed to Tinubu’s DICTATORSHIP — at work.”
The ADC, recently adopted as the official platform for an opposition coalition aimed at unseating the All Progressives Congress (APC), has drawn interest from a wide array of political figures. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi are part of the coalition.
In his post, Ibe said the rising momentum of the coalition is fueled by dissatisfaction with the current administration’s governance record.
“The ADC coalition leaders are angry with the mess that Tinubu has made of Nigeria,” he stated. “They’re angry at how the material condition of the average citizen has deteriorated… at the skyrocketing prices of food… that even the minimum wage cannot buy a bag of rice.”
He also expressed concern over the worsening security situation in the country.
“What is wrong,” Ibe added, “is when you sign up to be president like Tinubu, and your era is marked by incompetence and cluelessness. That is a waste of opportunity.”
