The University of Benin (UNIBEN) has placed a total ban on sign-out celebrations by graduating students, warning that anyone who defies the directive risks suspension, expulsion, or even withdrawal of their certificate.
The decision was announced in a circular issued by the Registrar, Mr. Ademola Bobola, on Tuesday in Benin City.
He said the move followed a management meeting held on Monday, where the university reaffirmed its earlier ban on such activities within the campus.
According to the circular, UNIBEN will not tolerate any form of sign-out celebration: including writing on shirts, playing loud music, or any kind of public gathering after exams.
The university also warned students against moving around campus in groups or parading in vehicles, adding that unapproved cars would be denied entry during the final week of second-semester exams.
Photographers have also been barred from setting up photo stands or galleries for the purpose of the celebration. In addition, parents and guardians of final-year students were urged to avoid visiting campus, especially on the last day of exams.
Bobola explained that the measures were taken to maintain order and discipline across the university environment.
“Any student who disobeys this directive will face serious consequences, including rustication, expulsion, or withdrawal of certificate,” the circular stated.
UNIBEN now joins other Nigerian universities, such as Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Federal University Lafia, IBB University, Kaduna Polytechnic, and the University of Port Harcourt, which have also banned sign-out activities by graduating students.
