A man has been arrested after allegedly stealing ₦290,000 from a fellow passenger aboard an Abuja-bound flight.
The incident was shared by another passenger, Chioma Ifeanyi, who recounted the ordeal in a Facebook post that has since gone viral.
According to Chioma, the passengers were seated and waiting for takeoff when a foreign passenger suddenly raised an alarm that his money was missing. He reportedly noticed that his bag, originally placed in the overhead compartment above his seat, had been moved to another compartment and ₦290,000 taken from it.
A video showing the moment the suspect was escorted off the aircraft by airport security has since been circulating widely on social media.
Chioma said another woman on the plane immediately identified the man seated opposite her as the one who moved the foreigner’s bag. When confronted, the suspect denied it, but a search revealed the missing money hidden under his seat. The discovery shocked passengers, who expressed disbelief that a theft could happen even before takeoff.
She added that the flight was delayed for about 20 minutes while security officers arrived to arrest the visibly nervous suspect. Chioma noted that his bag contained only one shirt and no personal items, raising suspicions that he may have boarded the flight solely to steal.
She praised the woman whose alertness helped expose the culprit, adding that the foreign passenger kept repeating, “I won’t let this slide.”
