Soldier takes own life after killing wife in Niger

The Nigerian Army has confirmed that one of its personnel, Lance Corporal Akenleye Femi, took his own life after allegedly killing his wife at Wawa Cantonment in Niger State.

The incident, which occurred on October 11, 2025, was announced in a statement by Captain Stephen Nwankwo, Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations.

According to the statement, the lifeless bodies of the couple were found in their apartment at Block 15, Room 24, Corporals and Below Quarters, Wawa Cantonment.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the soldier, who was on duty within the cantonment, had sought permission from his superior to attend to personal needs and return to duty. It was thereafter that the bodies of the soldier and his wife were discovered,” the statement read.

Captain Nwankwo said the remains of the deceased have been preserved, while a full investigation has commenced to uncover the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

The Army expressed deep regret over the development and extended condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of the deceased.

“The Commander, 22 Armoured Brigade, Brigadier General Ezra Barkins, assures the general public that the incident will be thoroughly investigated and the outcome made public,” the statement added.

The Army further appealed for public understanding and cooperation, pledging that measures would be taken to prevent a recurrence of such an incident.
