The Federal Government has implemented the “no work, no pay” directive across all federal universities in response to the two week warning strike embarked upon by the academic staff union of universities (ASUU).
The federal government ordered vice-chancellors of all federal universities to strictly apply the rule against lecturers who participate in the strike action.
The directive was issued in a circular dated October 13, 2025, signed by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa.
The circular was copied to several key officials, including the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Pro-Chancellors of federal universities, and the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC).
The Education Ministry expressed disappointment that ASUU went ahead with the strike despite multiple calls for dialogue. It warned that the government would no longer tolerate breaches of labour laws.
“In line with the Labour Laws of the Federation, the Federal Government reaffirms its stance on enforcing the ‘No Work, No Pay’ policy for any employee who refuses to perform official duties during strike actions,” the circular stated.
Dr. Alausa directed all vice-chancellors to immediately carry out a roll call and physical headcount of academic staff, submit reports identifying those at work and those absent, and withhold salaries of striking lecturers.
He clarified that members of the Congress of University Academics (CONUA) and the National Association of Medical and Dental Academics (NAMDA), who are not part of the strike, should not face any salary cuts.
The minister also instructed the NUC to monitor compliance and send a full report to the ministry within seven days.
“Please treat this matter with utmost urgency and a deep sense of national responsibility,” Alausa urged university heads.
