The chairman of Agege Local Government Area in Lagos State, Hon. Tunde Azeez has resigned from his position.
The vice chairman, Abdul-Ganiyu Vinod Obasa, the son of the Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, has assumed office as the new chairman.
Azeez who was sworn in on July 26, 2025, tendered his resignation due to health challenges that had kept him away from active duties since shortly after his inauguration.
Before his resignation, Obasa had been acting as chairman while Azeez was on medical leave.
The transition has sparked political reactions, with some opposition figures alleging that it was a well-planned move to install the Speaker’s son as council boss.
They claimed the arrangement began during the July 12 local government elections, when Obasa’s initial nomination as the All Progressives Congress (APC) chairmanship candidate was opposed by some party stakeholders.
Following the opposition, Azeez was eventually selected as the party’s candidate, while the younger Obasa was picked as his running mate.
Barely a month after the election, Azeez went on medical leave, and his eventual resignation has now handed full control of the council to Obasa.
Party leaders loyal to the APC have, however, defended the development, insisting that Azeez’s decision to step down was made in good faith to focus on his health, and that the new chairman has already shown the capacity to lead effectively.
