Nnamdi Kanu writes Trump over genocide
Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has written an open letter to former United States President Donald Trump.
Kanu warned that the killing of Christians in Nigeria has spread to the Southeast region.
Kanu, who has been detained by the Nigerian government, said that many Igbo Christians are now victims of targeted attacks that have gone beyond the northern part of the country.
In the letter, he said the killings were being carried out under the guise of fighting terrorism.
He narrated how he has survived several assassination attempts allegedly linked to the Nigerian state since 2015 and recalled his abduction from Kenya in 2021, which he described as an illegal act that violated international law.
Kanu stated that despite a court ruling in Kenya condemning the operation, he was still taken to Nigeria and held in solitary detention in Abuja.
The IPOB leader accused the Nigerian military of carrying out attacks against Judeo-Christians in the Southeast while blaming the victims.
He alleged that the same extremist groups causing violence in the North, such as Boko Haram, ISWAP, and Fulani militias,were now operating in Igbo, speaking areas of Benue, Kogi, and Delta with state backing.
Kanu also claimed that the government has used insecurity as a tool to tarnish IPOB’s image.
He said IPOB was wrongly branded as a terrorist group despite not being violent and accused the authorities of using state-backed militias to stage attacks under the label of “unknown gunmen.”
In his message to Trump, Kanu appealed for attention to what he described as an ongoing genocide against Judeo-Christians in Southeastern Nigeria and urged the international community to take action before the situation worsens.
