Senator Ned Nwoko has denied allegations made by activist Omoyele Sowore that he married actress Regina Daniels when she was still a minor, describing the claims as false and misleading.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Nwoko said Regina told him she was 21 years old when they first met and that she provided an INEC voter’s card to support her claim.
“It has come to my attention that false claims are being circulated by Regina, suggesting that I married her when she was 17 years old. These claims are entirely untrue and misleading,” the senator said.
“For clarity, during my first meeting with Regina, I asked her age, and she told me she was 21 years old. I further asked if she had any document to support this, and she presented her INEC voter’s card, which clearly shows that she was born on October 10th, 1998,” he added.
Nwoko said he has kept the document since their first meeting and pointed to a BBC interview granted by Regina’s mother after their marriage as further evidence supporting his position.
“According to all verifiable records, our marriage took place six years ago, which means Regina is 27 years old today. Any suggestion that I married her at 17 is false and should not be accepted by the public,” he stated.
The senator also urged the public to treat recent claims about him with skepticism, alleging that Regina’s “current mental condition” and struggles with “illegal drug addiction” have influenced her behavior.
Nwoko’s response comes hours after Sowore accused him of falsifying documents, including a voter’s card, to conceal Regina’s age at the time of their marriage — a claim that sparked widespread debate online.
