Gunshots and tear gas shook the surroundings of the PDP National Secretariat on Tuesday as police moved to disperse surging supporters from rival factions battling for control of the party.
Dockaysworld reports that the confrontation intensified when security operatives fired warning shots into the air and released tear gas at the entrance of Wadata Plaza to push back crowds loyal to both camps.
The clash erupted as the Anyanwu–Abdulrahman faction attempted to stop Governors Seyi Makinde and Bala Mohammed from accessing the building.
Despite the tension, Makinde and Bala Mohammed arrived with the newly-elected National Chairman, Tanimu Turaki SAN, and forced their way into the premises with the help of their security details.
They went straight into the NEC Hall, where the Abdulrahman-led group was already seated for its own meeting.
Turaki addressed the press inside the secretariat, explaining that incidents caused by opposing actors had forced his camp to postpone its meeting to Wednesday.
Police officers have also ordered every party member to immediately leave the PDP National Secretariat.
The standoff escalated after Anyanwu’s loyalists, who had been controlling access since morning, openly described the governors as intruders and vowed not to allow them into the meeting.
Their resistance triggered the heavy security response that resulted in tear gas and gunshots around the secretariat.
The dispute follows the morning takeover led by Abdulrahman Mohammed, who is being positioned by the Wike-aligned bloc as the new national chairman, a move firmly rejected by the Makinde–Turaki camp.
