Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, has raised concerns around the role of the military, or lack thereof in the recent kidnapping of about 25 schoolgirls in the state.
The governor questioned the military over the withdrawal of troops from Government Girls’ Comprehensive Secondary School, Maga, shortly before dozens of students were abducted in Danko-Wasagu Local Government Area.
Idris raised the concern on Thursday while receiving Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President, Joe Ajaero, who paid a solidarity visit to the state.
The governor said he was “deeply troubled” that soldiers left the school despite prior intelligence alerts issued by the state government.
According to him, troops reportedly pulled out around 3am, and the attackers struck less than 45 minutes later.
“We provided intelligence reports. We alerted them. So, who gave the order for troops to withdraw at that critical hour?” Idris asked, calling for a full military investigation.
He added that the withdrawal contradicted earlier assurances of improved security for schools in border communities frequently targeted by armed groups.
Ajaero expressed solidarity with the state and families of the abducted students, urging federal security agencies to ensure the girls’ safe return.
Meanwhile, another kidnapping involving in Niger state pupils and staff has caused an uproar due to similar recent attacks.
