Peter Obi dumps Labour Party, Presidency reacts
Peter Obi, who contested the 2023 presidential election under the Labour Party, has moved to the African Democratic Congress, a party backed by an opposition coalition.
He made the defection public in Enugu on Wednesday, December 31, saying the move is part of his plan as the country heads toward the 2027 general election.
Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, said the focus is to work toward real change in the country and to give Nigerians new hope in the coming years.
He added that the journey toward this goal will fully take shape from 2026.
Obi also said the opposition will work together to protect the vote through lawful means during the 2027 polls.
He called on opposition figures to unite as one team under the guidance of former Senate President David Mark so they can work together for the country.
Meanwhile the Presidency has reacted to the development.
The response came from Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Policy Communication.
He accused Obi of jumping from one party to another and said the former Anambra State governor has no clear political path.
He also used harsh words to describe Obi’s latest move and linked it to poor political judgment.
Bwala recalled Obi’s past movements across parties, starting from APGA to PDP, then Labour Party, and now ADC. He said this shows a long record of switching platforms and said that such behaviour affects trust and long-term stability in politics.
He also attacked Obi’s advisers, saying they are partly responsible for what he described as weak strategy and wrong decisions.
