The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has warned supporters of its presidential aspirants, including those of ex-governor Peter Obi over potentially divisive politicking that could endanger the party.
Speaking during the virtual ADC Coalition Hours on Saturday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bola Abdullahi, cautioned that rigid loyalty to any single aspirant would only benefit the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Bola Tinubu.
“Those shouting ‘Peter Obi or nothing’ are equally not helping him. They are preaching division, and they are not selling him,” Abdullahi said.
He urged supporters to rally behind all aspirants collectively, stressing that unity was critical to winning the presidency in 2027.
The ADC emerged as a coalition platform in July 2025 after opposition figures adopted it to challenge President Tinubu.
Since then, the party, led by former Senate President David Mark as National Chairman and ex–Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola as National Secretary, has been consolidating its structures nationwide.
Former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi joined the ADC in July, followed by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar in November and former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi on December 31, with more aspirants expected to join the race in the coming weeks.
Abdullahi said he had engaged key coalition leaders to emphasise unity and shared purpose. He had said earlier… “I spent time talking to His Excellency Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi and Rotimi Amaechi, who have indicated interest in vying for the presidential ticket of our party, as well as the likes of Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, to strengthen our party and unite it. The general consensus is that we have a job to do to make this country a better place.”
On the 2027 election timeline, he noted that while early elections could favour the opposition due to public dissatisfaction with the current administration, rushed polls could also hurt the party if post-primary divisions persist.
“Whether the elections take place this year or next year, it will be double work for us… as an opposition, we need time to heal wounds after our primaries.”
Abdullahi also warned against internal sabotage.
“Those supporting this divisiveness among supporters of any of the aspirants should stop what they are doing because they are clearly working to the advantage of the APC and President Bola Tinubu.”
He added that the party would intensify efforts to promote cohesion and ensure its leaders speak with one voice ahead of the elections.
