President Bola Tinubu has appointed Ambassador Ismail Abba Yusuf as the new Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), subject to Senate confirmation.
This was disclosed in a State House press release signed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.
In the statement seen by Dockaysworld, the President said he has forwarded a letter to Senate President Godswill Akpabio requesting the expeditious confirmation of Ambassador Yusuf in line with Section 3(2) of the NAHCON Act, 2006.
Yusuf is expected to replace Professor Abdullahi Usman, who resigned earlier this week after about 14 months in office.
Ambassador Yusuf is a career diplomat who served as Nigeria’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Republic of Türkiye from 2021 to 2024.
Professor Usman had resigned amid controversy surrounding his administrative style and financial management of the commission.
Before stepping down, he faced sustained criticism, allegations of corruption and a vote of no confidence by stakeholders over his leadership.
The former chairman said he resigned based on personal conviction after consultations with his family and other stakeholders, noting in a letter he personally signed that the decision was taken “in good conscience” and with deep respect for public service.
