Senator representing Ogun East, Gbenga Daniel, has withdrawn from the All Progressives Congress (APC) senatorial primary election scheduled for Monday.
His decision comes amid rising tension and claims of possible attacks on his supporters during the exercise.
Daniel, a former Ogun State governor and serving senator, has been in a political dispute with Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun over the party’s ticket for Ogun East.
The disagreement between both camps has grown in recent weeks, with supporters on both sides trading accusations and raising concerns about the process leading to the primary.
A statement issued on Sunday by the Bola Ahmed Tinubu – Otunba Gbenga Daniel (BATOGD) Movement explained that the withdrawal followed fears over security.
The group said unusual movements and the presence of suspected troublemakers created anxiety ahead of the election, and it accused some individuals linked to the state government of making threats against Daniel’s supporters.
The movement said it could not expose its members to harm and advised them to stay away from the primary venues.
Daniel’s media aide, Steve Oliyide, later confirmed that the senator supported the decision to withdraw.
He explained that the priority was the safety of supporters, adding that participation would only continue if conditions allow a fair process with proper security for all involved.
