President Bola Tinubu has approved a final six-month tenure extension for the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Adewale Adeniyi.
The extension, announced in a statement issued on Friday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, will run until February 2027.
Adeniyi’s previous tenure extension was scheduled to expire on August 1, 2026. According to the Presidency, the additional six months will enable him to consolidate the implementation of the National Single Window initiative and ensure a smooth succession process within the Customs Service.
During the transition period, Adeniyi is expected to work closely with the Nigeria Customs Service Board to oversee the promotion of eligible officers to the rank of Comptroller of Customs and enforce the compulsory retirement of officers who have reached the age of 60 or completed 35 years in service.
Adeniyi joined the Nigeria Customs Service after graduating from Obafemi Awolowo University in the late 1980s and steadily rose through the ranks.
He became a Deputy Comptroller in 2012, Comptroller in 2017, Assistant Comptroller-General in 2020, and Acting Deputy Comptroller-General in January 2023. President Tinubu appointed him as Comptroller-General of Customs in June 2023.
The Presidency described the extension as a final measure aimed at ensuring continuity in key reforms and an orderly leadership transition within the service.
