Outrage as NYSC doctor Oghenetega Enakirerhi dies after sick leave was denied for 3 weeks

A 25-year-old medical doctor serving under the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Dr. Wisdom Oghenetega Enakirerhi, has died after reportedly waiting three weeks for approval of his sick leave, sparking widespread reactions on social media.

According to reports, Enakirerhi became seriously ill while serving at his place of primary assignment and repeatedly requested permission to return home for treatment. However, his requests were allegedly denied because he was needed at the hospital.

His sick leave was eventually approved on June 26, 2026, but he died three days later, on June 29, after returning home.

Reacting to the incident, Dr. Akpoyibo wrote, “A 25-year-old medical doctor who spent seven years in medical school, completed a one-year internship, and was serving in the NYSC was sick, asked for permission for a good three weeks’ leave, but he was not granted permission and now he is dead.”

He further claimed, “Funny enough, the father and brother of this young man are doctors. They asked that he should be allowed to come home for care, but they refused.”

Another X user, identified as MrMekzy, who said he knew the deceased, described the reports as accurate.

“This is my neighbor, and everything written here is true. Such a young and vibrant young man, cut short in his prime. Keep resting with God, Tega,” he wrote.

Neither the NYSC nor the hospital where Enakirerhi reportedly served had issued an official statement on the incident as of the time of filing this report.
