The Federal Government has renamed the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, with the road now officially called the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Coastal Highway.
The announcement was made on Thursday by the Minister of Works, David Umahi, during an update on the progress of the country’s major road projects.
He said the decision was taken by the Federal Ministry of Works after consultations with the ministry’s leadership, including the Permanent Secretary, the Minister of State, directors and other officials.
Umahi said the highway was renamed in recognition of Tinubu’s role in coming up with the idea for the project many years ago.
According to him, the President first conceived the plan about 27 years ago while serving as the Governor of Lagos State and has now overseen its implementation as President.
The minister also gave details of the ongoing construction work on the 750-kilometre Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway.
He said work is taking place at the same time on different sections of the road across several states.
He explained that the first section, which runs from Victoria Island to Eleko Village in Lagos State, covers 47.47 kilometres.
The road also includes a 25-metre-wide median reserved for a future railway line.
Umahi said the second section, stretching from Eleko Village to the Lagos-Ogun boundary, has reached about 60 per cent completion.
He added that most of the work on that section is expected to be finished before the end of November, although some bridge construction will continue.
He also said work is moving forward on other sections of the highway in Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Ogun and Ondo states.
According to him, the 75-kilometre third section from Calabar is about 30 per cent complete, while the 82-kilometre fourth section through Ogun and Ondo states has reached around 20 per cent completion.
Construction is also progressing on the 180-kilometre section in Akwa Ibom State.
