A passenger on a Kenya Airways flight from Nairobi to Lagos has died after reportedly becoming agitated and attempting to gain access to restricted parts of the aircraft.
The man, whose identity was not disclosed, reportedly became unresponsive about 20 minutes before the flight landed at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport on Tuesday night. The airline said its crew administered first aid before medical personnel confirmed his death after landing.
The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) said the passenger had reportedly been denied entry into Madagascar and was being returned to his point of departure. NCAA spokesman Michael Achimugu said he became restless during the flight, allegedly tried to enter the cockpit and later attempted to open the rear door before being restrained.
“His hands were tied to his back to ensure that he stopped the trouble. But when he got to Nigeria, he was declared dead on arrival,” Achimugu said.
Police confirmed that an investigation had begun, saying the passenger developed breathing difficulties before the aircraft landed. His remains were deposited at a morgue in Ikeja, while statements have been obtained from members of the crew, including the captain.
Kenya Airways said it was cooperating with the passenger’s family, authorities and aviation regulators over the incident.
