Full list of states that have approved state police bill
Twenty-four states across Nigeria have approved the proposed state police bill, meeting the constitutional requirement for the legislation to proceed towards becoming law.
However, 12 states are yet to approve the proposal as discussions continue across the country.
According to Vanguard, more states are expected to conclude their deliberations on the bill next week.
The proposed establishment of state police has remained a major issue in Nigeria’s security discussions, with supporters arguing that state-controlled police formations could improve security by allowing authorities to respond more quickly to crimes and other threats within their jurisdictions.
The states that have approved the bill are Adamawa, Delta, Edo, Kwara, Nasarawa, Ogun, Osun, Oyo, Plateau, Rivers, Taraba and Zamfara.
Others are Enugu, Anambra, Imo, Ekiti, Kebbi, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Benue, Cross River, Abia, Yobe and Kaduna.
With these approvals, the number of supporting states has reached 24, meeting the required threshold for the proposed constitutional amendment.
Meanwhile, 12 states are still expected to make their positions known on the bill.
The states yet to approve the proposal are Lagos, Ondo, Ebonyi, Kogi, Niger, Borno, Gombe, Bauchi, Jigawa, Katsina, Kano and Sokoto.
Their decisions are expected to determine whether further support for the proposal will emerge as deliberations continue.
