Former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Attahiru Jega, has advised that if any amendment must be effected in the 2022 Electoral Act, it should include the prohibition of cross carpeting, which is common among candidates standing for elections.

Jega made the statement while speaking at the Citizens’ Townhall on Electoral Reforms, organised by a monitoring group, Yiaga Africa and the European Union in Abuja earlier today.

He added that the trend where candidates cross from one political party to another was threatening the fundamental process of the nation’s democracy.

The former INEC Chairman also advocated for the separation of the electoral body, INEC and review of the appointment process of the Chairman and Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) of the commission.
