Segun Showunmi, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has issued a threat of legal action against the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) if a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting is not called within 48 hours.

Sowunmi, through his lawyer Anderson Asemota, delivered a letter to the National Chairman and Secretary of the PDP, expressing concern over the party’s failure to hold a NEC meeting for over a year.

According to Showunmi’s legal representation, the sacked Chairman, Dr. Iyorcha Ayu, convened the last NEC meeting on September 8, 2022.

He said the prolonged absence of NEC meetings is considered a breach of the PDP’s constitution, which mandates quarterly NEC meetings to address critical issues within the party.

In the letter titled “Urgent Need To Call Meeting of National Executive Committee/Pre-Trial Notice,” Showunmi emphasized that despite the PDP’s participation in the 2023 general elections and off-cycle governorship elections in Kogi, Imo, and Bayelsa States, mandatory quarterly financial reports and election reviews have not been presented due to the lack of NEC meetings.

The letter urged the PDP leadership to adhere to the party’s constitution and convene the NEC meeting promptly, emphasizing that failure to do so within 48 hours would result in legal proceedings.

Showunmi, a former PDP governorship aspirant in Ogun state and contender for the National Chairmanship seat, stressed the importance of NEC meetings for proper decision-making and the overall functioning of the party.

“It is imperative to state that convening the NEC meeting of our party, PDP, will help to galvanize and electroplate the proper functioning and decision-making process within the party. “he said.
