Senate President, Godswill Akpabio has officially declared the seat for the Edo Central Senatorial District vacant.
This follows the swearing-in of Monday Okpebholo as the governor of Edo State.
He was the previous occupant of the seat.
The announcement was made during the Senate’s plenary on Wednesday.
Okpebholo, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), had represented the district until his swearing-in as governor in November.
With his assumption of office, his senatorial position was rendered vacant, as outlined in the Nigerian Constitution.
In response to the vacancy, the Minority Leader, Abba Moro, wrote to the Senate President requesting the seat be declared vacant and urging the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to organize a by-election to fill the position.
The Senate has complied with this request, and INEC has been directed to carry out the election to select a new representative for Edo Central.
In a similar move, House of Representatives speaker, Tajudeen Abass on Wednesday declared the seat of the deputy governor of Edo state, Denis Idahosa, vacant.
Idahosa, represented Ovia Federal constituency.
