The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has explained why some students with high UTME scores are not getting into universities.
In a statement, JAMB said that admission is based on more than just UTME scores.
Universities also consider O’level results and post-UTME scores when selecting students.
JAMB addressed complaints from parents who accused universities of rejecting their children unfairly.
They shared an example where a student with 201 in UTME was denied admission because he didn’t meet the university’s cut-off marks.
Another student who scored 345 in UTME also missed out because he ranked lower than the number of available slots.
JAMB urged parents to understand that admission is competitive and advised them to check the ranking system before making complaints.
They also warned against abusing the “exceptionally brilliant window,” which allows under-16 students to take the UTME if they meet strict academic requirements.
The board reassured students and parents that it remains committed to fairness and transparency in the admission process.
They encouraged those with concerns to use JAMB’s official complaint platform rather than making public accusations.
