The Association of Mobile Money and Bank Agents in Nigeria (AMMBAN) has said its members might have to raise their service charges due to the recent 50 percent increase in telecom tariffs approved by the Federal Government.
Ogungbayi Ganiyu, the group’s National Public Relations Officer, explained in an interview with DAILY POST that since their operations rely heavily on telecom services like data, the tariff hike would significantly affect their businesses.
He added that while point-of-sale (POS) operators might try to absorb the extra cost, it’s likely the new tariffs will eventually lead to higher service charges for customers.
Ganiyu mentioned that the association hasn’t formally reviewed the new tariffs yet.
Meanwhile, the National Association of Telecoms Subscribers has threatened to take legal action against the government over the increase, which is the first since 2013.
