The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajuddeen, has said more prominent politicians will likely join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) soon.
He made this known at a meeting of APC stakeholders from the North-West held in Kaduna.
According to his media aide, Musa Abdullahi Krishi, the Speaker believes the growing number of defections shows increased trust in the APC and its leadership, which he says has helped strengthen democracy within the party.
Since the 2023 elections, the APC has won governorships in 19 states and continues to hold the majority in both the Senate and House of Representatives.
The Speaker also noted that 25 federal lawmakers from states including Kano, Osun, Kebbi, Delta, and Edo have recently switched to the APC.
He spoke on the defection of Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and former governor Ifeanyi Okowa as major wins for the party.
He also celebrated the APC’s victory in the 2024 Edo State gubernatorial election, where Senator Monday Okpebholo won.
Abbas praised internal reforms within the party, such as better candidate selection and stronger grassroots structures.
These, he said, helped the party regain influence in places like Zamfara and Sokoto and improve its performance in South-South states like Rivers and Bayelsa.
He described the North-West as a powerful voting bloc in Nigerian politics, noting that the region has over 22 million registered voters.
However, he warned that having numbers isn’t enough unity and discipline within the party are crucial to winning future elections.
He urged party members to remain united and focused on shared goals.
