Nigerian catholic priest slumps, dies while playing table tennis


A Catholic priest in Anambra State, Reverend Father Anthony Nnaemeka Udogu, is dead.

He died on Monday, May 19, 2025, after collapsing during a game of lawn tennis.

The incident happened in the early hours of the day, and he was quickly taken to a nearby hospital, but efforts to revive him failed.

Father Udogu served as the Parish Priest of St. Francis Parish in Awka and was also the Dean of Awka Il Deanery before his sudden death.

Born on December 24, 1964, and ordained as a priest on August 19, 1995, he had been an active figure within the Catholic Diocese of Awka.

The Diocese shared news of his death in a statement on Tuesday.

The message confirmed that he slumped while playing tennis and passed away shortly after, despite medical attention.

The Diocese also expressed sympathy to his family, church members, and all who are mourning his passing.

Details regarding the funeral are expected to be announced later.
