The Nigerian government has taken legal action against Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan following her allegations on national television that there were plans to kill her.
The criminal case was filed shortly after she appeared on Channels Television’s Politics Today on April 3, 2025, where she alleged that top political figures, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio and former Kogi Governor Yahaya Bello, were involved in a plot against her life.
The charges, though not fully disclosed yet, are tied to statements she made during that live broadcast.
In the interview, she openly mentioned that her life was under threat and blamed Akpabio and Bello for allegedly planning her assassination.
She also raised concerns about the sudden withdrawal of her security, linking it to her suspension from the Senate, which she believes was done to expose her to danger.
Documents from the court show that the case was filed by the Federal Republic of Nigeria at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory in Abuja.
Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan is listed as the only defendant.
According to the charge sheet, the senator is being accused under Section 391 of the Penal Code Law for making statements believed to damage another person’s reputation.
If found guilty, she could face penalties under Section 392 of the same law.
This is not the first time Senator Natasha has raised alarms about threats to her safety.
Before the television appearance, she spoke at a political rally in Kogi State where she made similar accusations, insisting that meetings were held where her assassination was discussed.
She also claimed that money exchanged hands during those alleged meetings.
The tension between the senator and the Senate leadership has been ongoing. Apart from the assassination plot, she had earlier accused Senate President Akpabio of sexual harassment.
However, she was suspended from the Senate for six months, with the reason given as misconduct, not her allegations.
