An official of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has revealed why the results of the rescheduled Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) have not been released as expected.
Although the board had earlier informed reporters that the results would be made public on Wednesday, that plan was put on hold.
The official explained that JAMB is still reviewing the outcome of the exam and has not decided on a new release date.
A source within the board said the results are undergoing a final check by experts to ensure accuracy before they are released to candidates.
As part of the process, JAMB invited Professor Boniface Nworgu, an expert in educational measurement, to carry out an independent review of the results.
He is expected to complete the task at the board’s headquarters.
His review comes after JAMB’s internal examiner had already taken a first look at the scores.
Professor Nworgu has a long history with JAMB and has written materials for the board in the past.
His fresh review is aimed at confirming the integrity of the results before they are made public.
Meanwhile, JAMB also met with stakeholders on Wednesday and agreed to release the results of underage candidates.
These candidates cannot use the scores for admission, but the board believes they have a right to access their results.
During the meeting, officials also discussed the issue of examination malpractice.
There are plans to take legal action against candidates who were caught cheating in the recent UTME.
The rescheduled UTME was held after a system glitch affected results at 157 centres, mostly in Lagos and the South-east.
Over 379,000 candidates were affected and were asked to retake the exam. JAMB said the glitch was discovered during a quick review after candidates raised concerns about their scores.
The rescheduled test recorded about 95 percent attendance, and the board has announced plans to organize a mop-up exam for candidates who missed both sessions.
While many candidates are eager to see their results, JAMB says the review must be fully completed before anything is released.
