President Bola Tinubu has renamed the University of Maiduguri to Muhammadu Buhari University, Maiduguri.
This is to honour the late former President who died at the age of 82.
The decision was made public on Thursday during a special Federal Executive Council session held in Abuja, where Tinubu spoke about Buhari’s life and leadership.
He said Buhari lived with discipline, carried himself with honesty, and served the country with deep love.
The session was attended by cabinet members, top government officials, and close aides.
Tinubu reflected on Buhari’s time in office and their joint political efforts, especially the 2015 election victory that marked the first time power changed hands peacefully from one political party to another in Nigeria.
According to Tinubu, Buhari showed self-control while in office and stayed away from corruption and the usual thirst for praise.
He said the former president preferred to do what was right, even when it was unpopular, and often stayed quiet rather than seek attention.
The President also said Buhari’s personal strength and clean record in office should serve as a guide to those in power.
He described the former president as a man who focused on justice, fairness, and simplicity while leading the country.
As the meeting came to a close, those present observed a moment of silence in Buhari’s honour.
