Poultry farmers in Lagos have announced a plan to reduce the price of eggs by selling directly to consumers across all local government areas.
The Lagos chapter of the Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN) said it is taking this step to remove middlemen and make eggs more affordable.
The association revealed that customers currently pay as much as N6,500 per crate, even though the actual price at the farm ranges between N5,000 and N5,500.
By setting up sales points in local council offices, PAN will slash the price by as much as N1,000 per crate.
PAN’s chairman in Lagos, Mojeed Iyiola, explained that talks are ongoing with local government authorities to provide space where farmers can sell their products without extra charges from third parties.
The aim is to help struggling residents who are finding it hard to afford basic food items due to rising prices.
Although the government has helped reduce maize prices, one of the main ingredients in poultry feed, Iyiola noted that feed production remains costly because other ingredients like methylene, lysine, urea, and groundnut cake have become more expensive.
A 25kg bag of methylene that used to cost N25,000 now goes for around N150,000.
He added that while maize makes up about 60 percent of the feed, the high cost of the remaining ingredients is still affecting egg production costs.
PAN is urging the government to look beyond maize and find ways to stabilize the prices of all poultry feed components to make poultry products more affordable.
