The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has slated August 30, 2025, for the conduct of local government elections across the state, Dockaysworld reports.
The announcement was made during a stakeholders’ meeting held on Monday at the Commission’s headquarters on Aba Road, Port Harcourt.
The meeting brought together leaders of registered political parties, traditional rulers, security agencies, civil society organisations, religious bodies, professional groups, non-governmental organisations, and members of the public.
This move comes months after the Supreme Court nullified the previous local government elections held on October 5, 2024. In its February 28, 2025, ruling, the apex court found that the election process violated key provisions of the Electoral Act 2022, including the failure to issue a mandatory 90-day notice and irregularities in the handling of the voters register.
The case had been brought before the court by the All Progressives Congress (APC).
