Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has raised the alarm over an alleged scam involving the cloning of his voice by fraudsters attempting to defraud Nigerians with false promises of federal appointments, Dockaysworld reports.
In a statement issued on Thursday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Yomi Odunuga, the SGF said criminal syndicates have been impersonating him using voice-cloning technology to solicit money from unsuspecting individuals.
“From information available to the office, the fraudsters cloned the voice of the SGF, using it to solicit money in return for federal appointments,” the statement read.
Akume added that the perpetrators have also cloned the phone numbers of high-profile individuals to further deceive the public. According to him, victims are often told they have been selected for appointments and are then asked to pay between ₦5 million and ₦15 million, submit their CVs, and make payments to accounts linked to both traditional banks and fintech platforms.
“The warning becomes necessary as the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation has been inundated with enquiries relating to the activities of these fraudulent individuals and groups,” Odunuga stated.
Akume emphasised that the federal government’s appointment process is transparent and does not require any form of payment. He urged the public to disregard such offers and report suspicious activities to the authorities.
He further disclosed that the matter has been reported to the appropriate security agencies, who are now investigating the fraud.
