2027: Jonathan to reportedly give Obi appointment if he drops presidential ambition
Former presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Dumebi Kachikwu, has alleged that former President Goodluck Jonathan offered Peter Obi, a ministerial position to convince him to withdraw from the 2027 presidential race and support Jonathan’s bid.
Kachikwu made this allegation during a press conference held in Abuja on Friday.
He said Northern political elites brought Jonathan into the race with the intention of weakening southern influence in the election.
According to Kachikwu, Obi was told he could not secure votes from the North because he is an Igbo man.
He added that Obi was encouraged to accept the role of Coordinating Minister of the Economy or to run as Atiku Abubakar’s vice instead.
He said, “In order to weaken the South, they have now drafted in former President Jonathan into the race who is alleged to be offering Peter Obi the position of Coordinating Minister of the Economy for him to support his ambition.”
He also accused Northern political elites, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, of holding power for decades without improving conditions like poverty and illiteracy in the region.
Jonathan Reportedly Gives 3 Conditions To Accept PDP Presidential Ticket
Meanwhile Jonathan has reportedly given three conditions before agreeing to run for president again under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
According to reports, he wants two former political rivals, Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, to return to the PDP.
Atiku, who was the PDP candidate in the 2019 and 2023 elections, and Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s candidate in 2023, both left the party over disagreements.
Jonathan said that bringing them back will strengthen the party’s chance against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
In addition to this, Jonathan reportedly called for the expulsion of Nyesom Wike, the current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and former governor of Rivers State, from the PDP.
Wike’s actions during the 2023 elections, including his opposition to the PDP’s candidate and formation of a separate faction called the G5, are seen as damaging to the party’s unity and electoral success.
Political observers say if Jonathan’s demands are met, the PDP could unite its major leaders and improve its chances in the next election.
However, removing Wike could cause new tensions, especially in Rivers State where he has strong support.
