FG Appoints KWAM 1

The Federal Government has appointed Fuji musician Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, known as KWAM 1, as an ambassador to promote proper airport security procedures.

This follows his recent encounter with officials at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, announced the decision on Wednesday while addressing recent cases of unruly behaviour at airports.

He said the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) had reduced the artiste’s initial six-month flight ban to one month and would collaborate with him to create awareness on appropriate conduct in aviation spaces.

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) will oversee the engagement process.

The move comes after KWAM 1 publicly apologised for his role in the August 5 incident in which he allegedly obstructed a ValueJet aircraft from moving.

Authorities had accused him of carrying a flask suspected to contain alcohol, spilling its contents on security personnel, and walking onto the tarmac in breach of safety regulations.

Following his apology, the NCAA also agreed to withdraw a criminal complaint earlier filed with the police.

Keyamo explained that the leniency was granted after appeals from concerned individuals and a public show of remorse from the musician, while stressing that the government remains committed to enforcing aviation safety rules.
