Two years after the tragic passing of Nigerian singer, Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, his former label boss Naira Marley has finally shared his own side of the story, addressing long-standing allegations that linked him to the young artiste’s demise.
In a tell-all recount, the Marlian Music head honcho revealed that he was out of Nigeria at the time of Mohbad’s death in September 2023, and the news initially came to him as an unbelievable shock.
“Someone among us said, ‘Mohbad is dead.’ I looked at him and said, ‘It’s a lie, man. He wants to blow again.’ That was exactly what I said. I couldn’t believe it. Then I went online and saw Instablog saying Mohbad died of an ear infection. I said, ‘What? An ear infection? They’re lying, man,’” Marley recounted.
But while still trying to process the news, Naira Marley said social media erupted, with accusations immediately pointing fingers at him.
“Twitter just went boom, boom, boom. Next thing I saw was, ‘Naira Marley, finally you’ve killed him.’ I was shocked. I wasn’t even in Nigeria, and people already concluded it was me,” he explained.
The singer also pointed out that blogs began circulating old videos of Mohbad’s clashes, including the viral clip of his altercation with the NDLEA, and another fight with his manager in October 2022 suggesting a deliberate attempt to fuel negative narratives against him.
Marley insisted he had “nothing to do” with Mohbad’s death, stating that passport stamps and travel records prove he was outside the country.
“I didn’t even get to mourn him properly because everywhere I turned, people were blaming me. Anytime I tried to grieve, I would see comments saying I killed him. That was painful,” he said.
On the controversial viral video involving his associate, Sam Larry, and Mohbad, Naira Marley claimed he first saw the footage at the same time as the general public.
While the video triggered outrage, he maintained that Sam Larry was not in Nigeria at the time of Mohbad’s passing, which made him probe further.
“I was angry when I saw that video, but then I asked Sam Larry questions. He told me it wasn’t what people thought.
He said he only tapped a chair while asking for his money. Looking closely, I realized he didn’t touch Mohbad in the video. But blogs pushed it out to make us look guilty,” Marley added.
The Marlian Music boss emphasized that if Nigeria had stronger investigative systems, the focus would have been on those who were with Mohbad in his final hours, not on people who were out of the country.
Two years later, Naira Marley says he is still haunted by the accusations but stands firm on his innocence, stressing that he has evidence to prove his whereabouts at the time.
