The Nigerian movie industry has lost one of its respected veterans, Fabian Adibe, who passed away this morning at the age of 82.

Although he had been acting for years, Fabian Adibe rose to national prominence after his role in the Nollywood classic, Living in Bondage (1993).
The film, widely credited as the production that launched modern Nollywood, gave Adibe a platform that thrust him further into the limelight and cemented his reputation as one of the industry’s pioneers.
Career and Filmography
Over the course of his career, Adibe featured in more than 300 movies. Some of his notable works include Slave Warrior (2012), White Kingdom 2 (2014), and Father’s (2014).
He was not confined to Nollywood alone. Adibe also featured in international films such as Soweto, which spotlighted the struggles in South Africa, and Mr. Johnson, a Hollywood movie that expanded his recognition beyond Nigeria’s borders.
In many of his roles, he stood out as the voice of morality, the noble elder who never condoned evil; a character archetype that became synonymous with his name in Nollywood circles.
Personal Struggles
Despite his achievements, the revered actor also faced challenges later in life. In 2016, it was rumoured that Adibe had developed a visual impairment. Speaking in an interview with the Nigerian Tribune, he disclosed that he needed N13 million for eye surgery.
“The actor said his visual impairment affected his career for over 12 years,” the report stated. This struggle not only hampered his career but also highlighted the difficulties faced by many Nollywood veterans who contributed to the industry’s foundation.
Early Career and Service
Before Nollywood stardom, Adibe had a career with the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA). However, he was retrenched on May 25, 1984, a setback that eventually steered him fully into the world of acting.
