Another state bans graduation ceremonies for nursery, primary schools
The Edo State government has banned graduation ceremonies in nursery and primary schools while allowing approved textbooks to be reused by younger siblings.
The move aims to reduce costs for families and keep education practical for students across the state.
Only students who complete junior secondary school (JSS 3) and senior secondary school (SSS 3) are allowed modest graduation celebrations.
Parties and prom events for nursery and primary pupils are no longer permitted.
The Commissioner for Education, Dr. Paddy Iyamu, said the measures are part of ongoing reforms to improve education and student readiness.
The rules will take effect from the 2025/2026 academic session.
Additionally, all JSS 3 students will take part in mandatory entrepreneurship training.
Graduating students will receive both the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and a Skills Acquisition Certificate in their chosen trade.
This ensures students gain practical skills along with academic knowledge.
The state government said these steps aim to produce students who are prepared for both academic and real-world challenges.
Recall that the Imo State government also banned graduation ceremonies for kindergarten, nursery, and Junior Secondary School 3 (JSS3) students.
Graduation celebrations are now only permitted for Primary 6 and Senior Secondary School 3 (SSS3) students, in line with Nigeria’s 6-3-3-4 education system.
The state also directed that textbooks should have a four-year lifespan, allowing siblings to reuse them and reducing financial burdens on parents.
