Fresh details have emerged on why President Bola Tinubu returned to Abuja ahead of schedule, cutting short his vacation that was initially set to end on September 19.
The presidential jet arrived at the Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport at about 6:50pm on Tuesday.
Tinubu had been in France and the United Kingdom since September 4 on a working vacation.
According to Daily Trust, one key reason for his return is the expiration of the six-month state of emergency in Rivers State.
The emergency was declared in March following a political crisis between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
The crisis escalated after a faction of lawmakers moved to impeach the governor and attacks on oil installations were reported.
During the emergency, Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas was appointed sole administrator of the state.
The president now has to decide whether to end or extend the emergency, which involves signing a decree and ensuring a smooth handover of power.
Another reason for Tinubu’s return is preparation for the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, which began on September 9.
Protocol requires the president to leave Abuja two days before the high-level debate on the 23rd of September.
This makes his presence in the country necessary to complete local responsibilities before departing.
