Activist Harrison Gwamnishu has spoken publicly after regaining freedom from police custody, two weeks after his arrest over allegations linked to the ransom raised for a kidnapped couple in Edo State.
Gwamnishu was taken into custody following accusations that he diverted part of the ransom money.
Social media personality Verydarkman had earlier claimed credit for pushing for his arrest after alleging he uncovered suspicious actions surrounding the case.
In his first public statement after his release, Gwamnishu said he was grateful for the support he received, noting that many of his supporters stood by him without hearing his side of the story.
“For clarity, I was neither invited nor arrested by the Police,” he said. “As a law-abiding citizen, I voluntarily presented myself for investigation regarding the incident.”
He disclosed that he has not been charged, adding that the matter is still being reviewed by the Directorate of Public Prosecution.
Gwamnishu also thanked his legal team, naming Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Olayiwola Afolabi, alongside Dele Igbinedion and Favour Ajuebor, for securing his release.
Despite his long-standing criticism of police misconduct, he commended the Edo State Commissioner of Police for what he described as professionalism.
He also praised the investigation team led by CSP Osagie for their conduct during his detention.
“I sincerely appreciate every one of you,” he said, promising to personally thank supporters who stood by him throughout the period.
