Popular Nigerian actor Williams Uchemba has called for kidnappers to be publicly executed as a way of curbing the rising cases of the crime in recent times.
According to Williams, failure to punish crime only emboldens others to become criminals as well.
He noted that seeing kidnappers living large or being released from prison sends a message that consequences are minimal.
He stated that China was a good example of a country that enforces its constitution by punishing offenders accordingly.
Williams explained that his appeal was not about morality or the religious ideology of change and forgiveness, but rather about the simple enactment of laws to build a better society.
The actor explained that the psychological trauma of kidnapping essentially changes the lives of victims permanently and that many are dead in practice even though they still live.
Williams’ urging comes just a few days after singer Ruger also called for extreme measures to combat kidnapping, particularly with the expected hike that accompanies the festive period.
Dockaysworld notes that the death penalty for kidnapping is applicable when victims die in the course of the crime.
