The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has explained why Peter Obi and Nasir El‑Rufai are still not formal members, despite their public support for the opposition coalition platform.
Dockaysworld reports that during the unveiling of the platform earlier this month, both Obi and El‑Rufai were present, along with several key opposition politicians.
Clarifying the development at a press briefing on Sunday, the ADC’s Interim National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, said both leaders were given time to conclude commitments in their former parties.
“They were given the space to conclude pending processes, such as by‑elections and the selection of governorship candidates in their legacy parties,” he said.
Abdullahi stressed that the delay is not due to uncertainty within the ADC, but rather a sign of respect for ongoing political processes in Obi’s Labour Party and El‑Rufai’s alignment with the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
Even though they have not yet been formally inducted, both Obi and El‑Rufai are already engaged in the opposition coalition. The ADC is housing a new movement aimed at uniting opposition figures to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general election.
Meanwhile, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, also a key figure in the coalition, recently resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). In a letter dated July 14, 2025, he cited “irreconcilable differences” with the party, stating that it “diverges from the foundational principles” he helped to establish.
