ADC speaks on zoning of presidential ticket
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) is considering throwing its presidential ticket open to all eligible aspirants from both the North and South as preparations for the 2027 general elections gather pace.
The decision was discussed at the National Caucus meeting held in Abuja, the first since the opposition coalition adopted the ADC as its platform to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the next poll.
Party leaders at the meeting agreed that unity after the primaries will be crucial, with aspirants expected to support whoever emerges as the candidate.
During the meeting, the caucus directed members still holding membership in other political parties to resign, although no deadline was fixed.
It also instructed the National Working Committee to set dates for the party’s primaries ahead of next year’s off-cycle governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun states.
The gathering also resolved that coalition members promoting the All Democratic Alliance (ADA) should discontinue the group and concentrate on building the ADC.
This move signals a stronger commitment to consolidating opposition strength under one party.
Meanwhile, former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi and ex-Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai are said to be seeking clearance to conclude pending commitments in their legacy parties, including upcoming by-elections and governorship contests, before joining the ADC fully.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has already resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party but is yet to complete his registration with the ADC.
Those who attended the meeting include ADC National Chairman David Mark, Atiku Abubakar, National Secretary Rauf Aregbesola, Nasir El-Rufai, Aminu Tambuwal, and Rotimi Amaechi. Peter Obi was absent but sent apologies.
